About the Client: BunSlut

BunSlut is a smash burger concept bringing a bold, playful brand identity to the Houston dining scene. Known for serving juicy halal-certified beef burgers, crispy fries, and unique specialty creations, BunSlut combines street-style branding with premium ingredients.

What began as a single location has quickly grown to seven stores across Houston, each designed to create a high-energy, social environment where customers not only enjoy great food but also an atmosphere that feels like an extension of the brand. The concept depends heavily on brand-consistent design and execution—from neon signage and graffiti murals to seating layouts that support both fast-casual dining and high-volume takeout.

The Challenge

BunSlut needed a partner who could:

  • Transform a vanilla shell space into a high-impact restaurant environment.
  • Navigate Houston’s permitting process for food service operations, including health department requirements.
  • Install high-capacity kitchen systems (ventilation, grease traps, plumbing, fire suppression).
  • Incorporate unique branding elements, such as neon signage, murals, and specialty lighting.
  • Deliver the space on a strict timeline, allowing BunSlut to open doors and begin generating revenue quickly.

Our Approach

Pre-Construction & Permitting

  • Conducted site evaluations and reviewed landlord requirements for modifications.
  • Submitted plans to the City of Houston’s Permitting Center, addressing:
    • Health Department approvals for food prep, refrigeration, and sanitation zones.
    • Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) permits, including hood/ventilation systems and grease interceptor installation.
    • Building permits for structural modifications, signage, and interior partitions.
  • Coordinated directly with inspectors to ensure compliance with Texas Accessibility Standards (TAS/ADA) and local fire codes.

Demolition & Shell Prep

  • Conducted site evaluations and reviewed landlord requirements for modifications.
  • Submitted plans to the City of Houston’s Permitting Center, addressing:
  • Verified slab thickness and made adjustments to accommodate floor sinks and cleanouts.

MEP Infrastructure

  • Installed commercial-grade HVAC systems with rooftop units and exposed spiral ductwork for both aesthetics and functionality.
  • Built out kitchen plumbing systems, including three-compartment sinks, prep sinks, floor drains, and grease interceptors.
  • Installed new electrical panels, dedicated circuits for fryers/griddles, and LED/neon lighting integrations.
  • Designed and installed a Type I hood system with fire suppression and make-up air units, tested and approved through fire marshal inspection.

Interior Buildout

  • Constructed framing, drywall, and partitions to create a balance of booth seating, communal tables, and high-tops.
  • Installed durable, polished concrete flooring for heavy foot traffic and easy sanitation.
  • Applied specialty finishes, including graffiti murals, neon signage, and custom branding.
  • Built out the front-of-house service counter with durable millwork and integrated POS stations.

Final Inspections & Turnover

  • Coordinated all final inspections:
    • Building inspection for occupancy.
    • Health inspection for food prep and storage compliance.
    • Fire marshal inspection for hood suppression, egress, and emergency lighting.
  • Delivered a certificate of occupancy to BunSlut, enabling them to open to the public.

The Result

The completed BunSlut location is a seamless reflection of the brand:

  • Industrial-modern aesthetic with exposed ceilings, ductwork, and custom lighting.
  • Operationally efficient kitchen layout, ensuring speed of service and compliance with health codes.
  • Instagram-ready atmosphere, driving customer engagement with neon slogans and vibrant wall art.
  • Delivered on time and within budget, allowing BunSlut to continue its rapid multi-unit expansion strategy.
